Question 1

Can I use power-tool cleaning (St 3) instead of blasting?

Accepted Answer

For minor touch-up and repairs, St 3 is accepted practice (and the ASTM A780 route for galvanized repair). For full systems and new construction, Sa 2.5 blasting is the specification — power tools cannot reach the cleanliness or profile that long service life requires.

Question 2

How long after blasting can I paint?

Accepted Answer

Same day, ideally within four hours in humid or coastal climates — before visible flash rust. If the surface sits overnight, inspect for flash rust and re-blast or brush-off blast locally where needed.

Question 3

What profile (roughness) should I aim for?

Accepted Answer

Typically 40–75 µm (medium G) for zinc rich primers — always follow the product datasheet. Too smooth gives weak anchoring; too sharp burns primer film thickness on the peaks.

Question 4

Is Sa 2.5 necessary for aerosol touch-up work?

Accepted Answer

The full blast spec applies to large areas. For spot repair of scratches and weld seams, clean mechanically to St 3 minimum with fresh abrasive cloth, degrease, then apply the zinc spray in thin multiple passes.

Question 5

Who is responsible if the coating fails on a poorly prepared surface?

Accepted Answer

In practice, the applicator — which is why every serious specification includes inspection records: cleanliness photos against ISO 8501-1, profile readings, salt and dust tests. Good records protect both sides.
