A cold galvanizing compound in a pail is a brushable, roller-friendly, sprayable liquid — the format for area work. A cold galvanizing spray (aerosol) packs the same zinc rich chemistry into a pressurized can that needs no brush, no gun, no cleaning and no power. The electrochemistry is identical: zinc particles contact the steel and sacrifice themselves to protect it. What changes is scale, speed and logistics.

On real projects the two formats work as one system: the pail does the field application, and every crew carries a few cans as the touch-up kit for the damage that appears after installation — transport chips, weld spatter removal, bolt heads. Q2: Can I spray the pail compound instead of buying aerosols?

Yes — the compound is formulated for brush, roller and conventional or airless spray. Aerosols win on convenience and access, not on raw material cost.

Q3: How many cans do I need for a barrier repair?

Count the damaged area, not the barrier: one can typically covers 1–1.5 m² of scratches and cut edges at touch-up thickness. Patch only what is damaged and let the surrounding galvanizing keep working.

Q4: Which format lasts longer outdoors?

Neither — service life depends on zinc in the dry film, film thickness and preparation, not the packaging. Same zinc, same steel, same environment: same life.

Q5: Can the aerosol be used as a full primer under a topcoat system?

It can touch up a primer system, but for area priming use the pail compound — film build and cost per square metre are far more controllable. Overcoat window follows the same rules as the compound.
